How To Protect Your Special Seniors From Dehydration

As people age, the body is less able to conserve water, AND the sense of thirst diminishes.  By the time a senior may feel thirsty, their essential fluids may be extremely low.

Certain drugs and medical conditions may also deplete fluids in the body.  Look for the following dehydration signs:

  • Little or no urination, dark or amber-colored urine
  • Dry skin that stays folded when pinched
  • Irritability, dizziness or confusion
  • Low blood pressure, rapid breathing or heartbeat
  • Weak pulse, cold hands and feet

To avoid dehydration, have seniors try the following to increase their fluid intake:

  • Drink flavored waters

  • Eat popsicles
  • Raw fruits and vegetables can hydrate – try celery sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, watermelon, grapes & blueberries.  Garnishes may encourage ingestion.
  • If vision is weak, use brightly colored cups so seniors can easily keep track of their beverge
